PREDICARE STEUN ACADEMY

REPORT OF SPELLING BEE COMPETITION, 2019

I. INTRODUCTION

In December 2018, members of the academy met to review the activities of the academy for the year 2018 in order to identify areas that need to be addressed. During the meeting, the plans of the academy for 2019 were discussed.

This birthed the idea to host a spelling bee competition which is pivoted on two key missions of the academy:

· Promoting educational excellence and adding value to intellectualism through contests; competition, funding, and reward for excellence (scholarship).

· To cultivate a reading culture in the young minds, creating a platform that would make education attractive and a worthy adventure to embark on.

We give glory to God for His provisions towards the maiden edition of the spelling bee competition. This report is a summary of the spelling bee that took place on Saturday, October 12, 2019.

II. SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

The spelling bee started at about 10:40 am with registration of students from the invited schools and other attendees of the program. The main event started at about 11:30 am with an opening prayer by Mr. Olakunle Olatunji. Afterward, the national anthem was rendered by Mr. Temidayo Adepoju (TemmySax).

The opening remarks and the vision of the academy was delivered by the Visioneer, Mr. Olayinka Arimoro. There were fourteen (14) contestants from seven (7) schools for the competition (2 contestants per school).

Just before the start of the competition, Engr. Oluwaseun Kazeem delivered an interactive keynote speech on the topic: “The beauty of discovering one’s purpose at a young age”.

After the keynote speech, the first and second rounds of the competition began. After the first two rounds, 12 students moved on to the next stage from the initial 14.

A short break was observed, where everyone was served drinks and snacks and the twelve (12) contestants proceeded to the third round. After the third round, scores were aggregated for the three rounds. Contestants who scored below 15 points were disqualified.

At the end of the third round, six (6) contestants advanced to the next (fourth) round. The fourth round was treated independently of former scores aggregated for each contestant. After this round, Ms. Favour Usifoh from Greater Tomorrow International Schools bagged the first position for the competition. Mr. Festus Akinyemi from Daropeg College came second.

In order to decide the third position for the competition, the four remaining contestants who had a tie were asked to spell a word. After this exercise, Mr. Daniel Akhajeme from EagerMinds College emerged as the third position.

The program ended with the presentation of certificates of attendance to invited schools and students who came to support the contestants from the schools. This was followed by the presentation of certificates of participation to students who contested in the competition, and the presentation of gifts and certificates of excellence to the best three students.

The two (2) anchors, Ms. Roselyne Ugbeye and Ms. Oluwakemi Oluwatoba, and the keynote speaker were also presented with plaques. The event came to a close at 4:30 pm and Mr. Olayinka Arimoro ended with a vote of thanks and announcements about upcoming programs of the academy. The closing prayer was said by Mrs. Omolara Adepoju.

Afterward, individual and group photography sessions were taken.

III. ATTENDANCE

The maiden spelling bee competition had in attendance, a total of eighty-one (81) people.

IV. CHALLENGES FACED

  • Low support from individuals and firms due to the use of a personal account to request funds and the academy not yet registered with CAC.

V. RECOMMENDATIONS

Feedback and evaluation questionnaires were given to teachers who attended and the following were recommended:

  • Screening of contestants' age and class in order to have a fair competition.
  • The program should be designed to come upon a terminal basis; more competitions like this should be hosted for the exposure of students.
  • More schools should be invited to subsequent competitions. As an extension, parents of students should be asked to witness the performance of their wards.
  • Winners should be rewarded handsomely, and non-winners should be encouraged.
